Before you think, Ilayaraja has restricted you from listening to his songs or you picturise Ilayaraja as an arrogant old man or simply putting status in fb telling 'sir, please sir' and all. Please read below for some clarity. This also includes history and the industry's trend of how it operates.

In early 2016 Raja sir sent a legal notice over copy rights violations to Director Shankar. This was regarding 'S pictures', Director Shankar's film production company when trying to release a movie 'Kappal'. I've never seen the teaser of this movie. But I remember reading Raja sir's tracks being used with out his formal consent.

Lets take an example, a book's author gets a certain amount of money for every book sold by his publisher. If you want to read it, you go to a book store and buy the book. The retailer gets an amount, the publisher gets an amount and the writer gets an amount. The part which goes to the writer is usually the least. 

We wouldn't understand as 90's kids coz we've never paid for music in our entire life! Have you ever seen a guy paying for his mp3 files ? :D We search as 'bla bla songs free download', don't we ??!!

We just see songs being sung in concerts, played in radios, reality shows, parties. But who'll give them the royalty?  Song chumma varuma boss!?!?

- The composer

- The composer's employer (the producer in our case)

- Another creativist

- Studio sound engineer

- Record label

When a film's songs are composed and recorded there are various rights which people can claim.

Ok what's that 'all sorts' ??

Usually when a music director composes music for a film it's not only the fee which is a source of his income he gets via that film. Below are the various income sources where a composer gets. This list doesn't include the types of income received by the lyricist or the recorder. They are other sources. Let's concentrate on the composer's income:

- Publisher Advance

- Mechanical Royalties

- Commissions

- Public Performance Royalties

- Streaming Mechanical Royalties

- Composing Original Works for Broadcast

- Synch License

- Sheet Music Sales

- Lyric Display

- Ringtone/ remix revenue

Swaroop Mamidipoodi, a lawyer in copyrights says:

Ilaiyaraaja is right to ask SPB for royalty, presuming he owns the musical work. The singer doesn’t have the copyright. Under law, he should get the composer’s permission, pay royalty and then perform.”

What about AR Rahman? He never gets caught in this problem?

-2013 Jai Ho starring Salman Khan, this film's producer was sent with a legal notice from Rahman regarding the unapproved use of 'Jai ho' which is owned by Rahman.

- Rahman has opted out of numerous projects during the discussion stages of films. This gets translated as if he had a fight with the heroes. That's to get our attention! Who cares if Reliance or Yash Chopra film company has a difference in opinion with Rahman ?!!!.. "AR fights with Salman Khan is more catchy" ... we would click that link for sure right ?!!! :D :D 

Wait wat??!?! Jai ho was composed by Rahman, does he own that ??!?

Ha! This is a classical ignorance you've got about Rahman which every other 99.99% fans also remain under. 

Do you remember when AR had a spat with Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanti Om's producer. This happened when AR was approached by its producer for the song composing task. Rahman as a usual practice wanted 'all sorts' of rights of a film's music for himself. 

Ok, if you aren't interested, just assume they are those satellite, radio, itunes, music channel permissions to be given for them to use. Rahman for most of his films gets this copyrights for himself before starting with the composing. 

So Rahman follows a pukka professional approach and contract for his works. He once said in an interview, using songs he composed in concerts or other performance gets difficult when the rights are owned by someone else. It's a professional move na, getting your rights clarified before the composing starts!

 They usually don't get the copy rights from the recording labels. This is because of ignorance or 'it doesn't matter' attitude! This is why we see famous music directors and singers do not sing their most famous songs on stage in a concert these days! We as muggles or 'no majs' blame them for not singing them. We doubt whether that song is famous or not!! lol !! I've been there! 😅😅

It's all copy righted bruuuh !! They don't wanna get into trouble !

So how does AR overcomes this and never gets himself into these tantrums. We see Rahman in recent years (Or shud I say for the last 10 years) has been into concerts, music production etc. Rahman now has become a money maker rather than a passionate music composer sitting and doing music for Barathiraja. People who say Rahman is still the best are those guys who has hair the in top and shave the sides! Adhan boss, kutti teenagers who wanna act all classy! They don't know the 'mudivacha Rahman' as we do! :( :'(

There's a talk, Rahman threw a lavish dinner party for the Oscar judges a few days before the verdict getting printed. Well, I'm saying nothing here, I'm just telling you what may have happened!

Hey you know about Rahman uh ?!?! How dare you talk like this daaw??!? He's a gentle man, very humble, there's no pub out there without playing his tracks but he doesn't go to one daaw!?!?!

Dude, I'm just telling what I've read till now! In 2005 Income tax officials raided Rahman's house including many Kollywood celebrities.

Or after all he has Mani Ratnam to guide him on all these unknown film festivals and copyrights. Mani Ratnam being one of the finest directors knows all the nook and corner practices and nuances to apply for famous film festivals and get his films screened there by increasing his traffic! Many Tamil directors have openly expressed their thoughts on deprivation of these kinds of nuances and knowledge.

Ilayaraja sending a legal notice to SPB is nothing against law or ethics. It's just a late gesture and our affiliation towards his world class tunes that makes us think as if he's doing something wrong. Or may be some might say ' 7 swaram daaw' nee epdi daaw unodadhu nu sollalaam daaw !! I agree, I've not expressed my stand. I'm just making it clear for you. These were days, early days when Raja has started composing, people weren't even sure of their basic human rights, for copy rights where will they go daaw!!

There is one hear say info going around that this is a fight between their offspring and not actually SPB and raja! 

SPB could've tried mitigating this issue instead of posting this on FB! then there was a note saying:

For Ilayaraja, it's also some of his statements which are highly twisted by the media that makes us think he's arrogant and etc etc! I dunno, you tell me which incident it is !! (hey dakaalti, neeye thediko) ! :D

The writer was an early learner of carnatic music and done a couple of katcheris in his teenage. (ofcourse he has gotten out of teenage just now)  He's an ardent AR fan who had stuck Rahman's picture in his childhood days, done pooja and all (one mokka garland, and incense sticks)!
